Survivors Helping Other Women Survive (SHOWS) is a 501c3 non-profit corporation consisting of African American breast cancer survivors who are also Certified Community Patient Navigators and playwrights. We are dedicated to raising awareness of breast health, breast cancer, and survivorship utilizing the power of "Edutainment"- entertainment that educates.
Our short plays are performed throughout the Greater Cleveland area to educate and empower women by providing in-depth culturally relevant information on breast health, breast cancer, risk factors, myths and misconceptions, screening guidelines, and the importance of early detection and annual screenings.
OUR VISION is to live in a world where less women are suffering and dying from a cancer with a 98% cure rate.
OUR HOPE is to continue offering our novel and innovative approach of using live theater as a form of public messaging to raise awareness, educate and inspire.
OUR MESSAGE is about living, being informed, proactive, and consciously making shifts in our thinking and doing for optimal breast health.
WE HAVE PARTNERED WITH UNIVERSITY HOSPITALS, THE GATHERING PLACE AND THE BREAST AND CERVICAL CANCER PROJECT (BCCP) TO PROVIDE A NETWORK OF WRAP AROUND SERVICES THAT AIM TO DECREASE BARRIERS TO QUALITY CARE.

SHOWS/ Survivors Helping Other Women Survive began in 2009 when Bridgette A. Wimberly, a produced NYC playwright, poet and librettist, collaborated with The Gathering Place and Karamu House Theatre to teach a play writing class to breast cancer survivors and subsequently have their work performed on stage. We were funded by Susan G. Komen, NE, Ohio For the Cure. Our plays highlight the breast cancer experience from initial diagnosis to the celebration of survivorship.
Our play, From Breast Cancer to Broadway, became a series of 11 short plays interwoven into one. It sold out at the Cleveland Play House within 2 hours, well before word got out that the legendary Ruby Dee would be starring in it!!!
OVER THE YEARS, WE HAVE PERFORMED OR PRESENTED AT NEIGHBORHOOD CHURCHES, HOSPITALS, COMMUNITY CENTERS, HOUSING COMPLEXES, LIBRARIES, HUNGER NETWORK PROGRAMS, SORORITY EVENTS, JOB SITES, HEALTH SYMPOSIUMS, THEATERS AND CITY HALL. OUR PLAY WAS PERFORMED FOR 5 WEEKS AT KARAMU HOUSE THEATRE AS PART OF THEIR 2010-2011 THEATER SEASON.
